Prior to 1952 the U.S.Navy combined the rate of Signalman
( Visual Communications, Flag Hoist , Semaphore , signal Light )
and the rate of Quartermaster
( Celestial Navigation , Piloting , Etc ) into one rate.
In September of 1956 , three months after being discharged,
they were seperated back into two individual rates.
This combined rate was practical on ships such as Destroyers or
smaller craft such as PT boats, Landing craft , Etc.
On large ships such as Carriers or Cruisers Quartermasters
were assigned to specialize in either the Navigation rate or the Signaling
rate

USS Midway CVB41
Commissioned in 1945 the Midway was a straight flightdeck Carrier
with an open hanger deck similar to the picture at left of the old WW-II Bennington. These ships only supported prop driven planes.During my Reserve tour on the Midway in 1949 she served in the North Atlantic on post-war reconnaissance and as a Naval Reserve training ship.
The new Midway CVA-41 (View) is a modern Angle deck carrier capable of carrying the sophisticated jets of today. .
