Peter Guise

Born cc 1725
Died in Rockingham Co., Virginia
on Nov. 25th, 1782

Son of Claude Guise
The number of Claude's family is not known nor can we be certain of
the relationship of Claude to the other Guise settlers in this country,
namely Christopher and Wilhelm. It is of interest that in the biography
of Dr. William Guise dated 1893 there is evidence of communication
between the two lines in his reference to the three great branches of
the Guises and his knowledge of a Marriage in the Christopher Guise
lineage. ~~~ However it is shown that all three did come from the
Strassburg, Lorraine area in the early to mid 1700's although there is no
record of them being together. ~ Claude died possibly about 1760 - 1763
in the English Colony of New Jersey.

There is a court record showing that on the 15th day of April, 1771,
between the hours of nine and twelve, Peter Guise was among those
having received the sacrements of the Lord's Supper and showing
certificates that they have been a resident in his Majesty's Colonies
upwards of seven years. Whereupon they are naturalized according
to acts of parliament by taking the several oaths to the government
as required by law.

~~ The above wording taken from page number 258 of the court scribe's minutes
does not record the place of the hearing. ~~ However, another presentment against
a Thomas McDonald recorded on the same page 258 was adjourned and transferred
to the Baltimore County Court. ~~ This leads us to believe that Peter Guise was
naturalized ( on a Monday morning ) in Frederick County, Maryland.

The logistics of this coupled with the birth records of his children
show that Peter Guise , his wife and family moved from New Jersey
to Frederick County, Maryland between the years 1761 and 1765.
and there resided until about 1779 or 1780. Peter Guise and many
of his family moved to Rockingham County, Virginia before his
departure to meet the Lord in 1782.
~~~
Many of his descendants still reside in the Rockingham County area.
Grandson Shepherd Guice, son of Peter, moved to Lincoln Co. Georgia ,
then to Barbour Co. Alabama in 1838, thence in 1850 to Montgomery Co.
Alabama. ~~ His grandson, Thomas, son of Nicholas, moved to Talbot Co.
Georgia, and then to Barbour Co. Alabama about 1847.
Peter Guise's son, Phillip, travelled to the mountains of Buncombe
Co. North Carolina in the early 1800's or before and settled in what is now
called Henderson and Polk Counties. ~ He acquired large parcels of land
including tracts on both sides of the Green River along the old Howard
Gap Road. There he built an inn, a waystation for travellers and their
stock to rest and to aid them in crossing the rapids of the
Green River below.
Peter Guise and his wife Ottilia (aka. Delia, delilah)
were the parents of eight children.
